Ruth D. Hunt
Family Historian and Research Specialist
WELCOME
In 1977, nearly every American household tuned in to ABC-TV’s “Roots” miniseries. The story of an African man and his descendants sold into slavery captured the attention of an estimated 130 million viewers over the course of eight nights. It was inspired by Alex Haley’s novel Roots. Haley was named the Godfather of Genealogy because he popularized ancestral searching among scores of Black families to trace their heritage. I, too, was intrigued and began the fascinating journey of tracing my family history.
FAMILY HISTORIAN & RESEARCH SPECIALIST
Ruth D. Hunt was inspired by Alex Haley, the Godfather of African American Genealogy. She, too, wants to awaken the consciousness of people worldwide and inspire all races to embark upon their own personal journeys to explore their "Roots" and interconnecting relationships.
Ms. Hunt has changed the lives of so many and is praised for her masterful achievements in genealogy.
Ms. Hunt had the good fortune to meet the world's greatest motivator in the world of genealogy. In 1985, she had the honor and pleasure of meeting "The Genealogy Godfather, "Alex Haley! Surprisingly, Mr. Haley was fascinated with her family stories and encouraged her to continue the search. He autographed her book Roots with "Ruth, Keep on Searching," and the rest is history.
" My fondest hope is that "Roots" may start black, white, brown, red, and yellow people digging back for their roots. Man, that would make me feel 90 feet tall" Alex Haley
