Finding My Roots:
The
Cansler Family

THE CANSLER FAMILY CAME TO AMERICA IN 1749

In June 2015, I located my great, great, great, great grandfather Conrad W. Cansler's gravesite in the Hiwassee College Cemetery, Madisonville, Tenneessee.

Affectionaly called "Coonrade", he was born in 1780 in Lincoln County, North Carolina and died in 1846, in Madisonville.

Coonrad was the father of my great, great, great Grandmother Catherine Cansler, who is also buried there along with her family.

Catherine Cansler had four mulatto children by Appius, a man enslaved by her father Coonrad. Appius was willed to her upon her father's death.

"Three Generations" (pictured on the left) is the story of a colored family in Eastern Tennessee. This rare book, by my ancestor, Charles W. Cansler was published in the 1930s and documents my family lineage.

I was a contributor to the book pictured on the right, "The Cansler Family in America" which was published in 2001.
